JUNIOR & SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

CURRICULUM

NIGERIAN CURRICULUM (JUNIOR & SENIOR SECONDARY CATEGORY)

Based on Nigerian Curriculum

This Stage covers Years 7, 8 and 9 – the first three years of education at Bristol Academy. All subjects at this Key Stage are compulsory, and students will all take:

  • Art and Design
  • Coordinated Science
  • English (Language and Literature)
  • French Language
  • Geography
  • History
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Nigerian Studies
  • Personal, Social and Health Education

Physical Education

All subjects are taught following the guidelines of the Nigerian Curriculum, and at the end of Year 9 students will all sit for Junior Secondary Certificate Examination (JSCE) Nigerian Curriculum, Tests in English, Mathematics and Coordinated Science are compulsory. This allows each individual student to measure themselves against students in Nigeria, and in British International Schools all over the world, but more importantly allows us, as a school, to benchmark ourselves and the levels our students achieve, against these schools.

The school also has the entire examination bodies both internal and external, such as West African Examination Council (WAEC), and the National Examinations Councils (NECO) etc. the subjects offered here is based on the class of the students which could be science, art, commercial according to the general requirement by WAEC & NECO.

BRITISH CURRICULUM

A two-year course of study

When students enter Year 10 they embark on a two-year course of study leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Some subjects are compulsory, while students elect to take some as ‘options’. Students generally take 9 subjects, and all students sit the IGCSE examinations in all subjects they are taking.

Examinations are set and conducted by the Cambridge International Exams syndicate in England, and papers are all marked externally.

Students who do well in IGCSE examinations are able to go on and study for A-levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or may find they are able to enter the foundation programmes of some Nigerian Universities with acceptable IGCSE grades.
